Porthcurno Telegraph Museum

Find out more about the story of this historic communications hub with hands on exhibits, a trip into the secret WW2 tunnels and learning by doing.

In an era when we can contact someone on the other side of the world at the click of a mouse or the press of a button, it’s easy to forget that 150 years ago it could take months for messages to reach their destination. That was when the Packet Ships sailed out of Falmouth, delivering the ultimate snail mail to four corners of the globe.

In 1870 a cable was laid under the sea connecting Britain to Bombay, enabling messages to travel great distances in a few minutes. That cable was laid from Porthcurno.
